My Summer To-Do List

-plant and enjoy a vegetable garden
-take children out to play in the rain
(thanks, Ben)
-buy a beautiful night gown and wear it
-go swimming in a creek
-make and eat many popsicles (thanks, Em)
-get tan lines
-oh wait, get rid of tan lines

-plant flowers in window boxes
-eat a lot of ice cream
-go to the 4-H fair
-buy as many peaches as possible and freeze them
-take a break at least once an hour to delight in my children (this is one of my favorites!)
-put up a clothes line

-dress Selma up in outrageous bandannas
-keep flowers alive in window boxes
-make pesto with our basil once a week

And my, here we find ourselves on the cusp of August. I've got to get busy! How are your summer to-do lists progressing?

June 8: In Search of Summer

What would summer be without a dip in some cool water? Especially in muggy, humid Virginia, it is quite transformative to have a shady, close-by place where you can go for a quick dip.

I will not lie: I have been frequenting the pool just about every single day with my two wee ones. They love it, we all cool down, it's a wonderful way to pass a couple of hours, and it tires us all out (in the best way possible). One day we'll live next to a flowing river, or beautiful lake, or (can you imagine?) expansive ocean. But I'm not holding my breath: in the mean time, I'm just as happy to stroll down to the pool and enjoy one of summer's treats.

Searching for summer has been lovely-- and I do hope you will check to see what others have found through the button to the right. I feel like I have found it here. What about you?

June 6: In Search of Summer

Oh yes, now I remember it: long summer afternoons spent with family and friends, food grilling, children playing, adults chatting. I remember it from my own childhood, and now I am acquainted with it on the other end of things: losing track of my children for hours at a time but knowing full well they are safely playing with friends and cousins and aunts and grandparents; bringing a change of clothes because inevitably there will be a sprinkler or mud or cupcakes to smear on one's face; children and parents sleeping oh so deeply out of sheer physical exhaustion. The past two weeks we have lived out of our home, hopping from one get-together to the next, landing softly among friends and good food. It has been wonderfully exhilarating. Summer is truly here.

June 2: In Search of Summer

Yesterday at the library, my curiosity was piqued when I saw a woman with a beautiful long linen dress and colorful headscarf slowly walking around a tree, picking at the branches. We walked closer, and noticed what the procession was all about: not one, but two mulberry trees (one with dark berries, the other white) filled with ripe plump berries. Of course, we joined in the fun.

By sheer force of will, I even managed to bring some berries home. As you can see, there was a bit of a weak link in our berry picking infrastructure (aka: Lily). I imagine these berries will get eaten straight from the basket. But, if I go back in the next few days and manage to get some for the keeping, I would love to make this, from Simply in Season (my favorite cookbook yet):

Mulberry Pudding Cake

4 cups mulberries
Spread in a greased and floured 9 X 9 baking pan

2-3 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons flour
Combine and sprinkle over fruit

1/3-1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons butter
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
Cream together butter and sugar. Mix in egg and vanilla.

1 cup flour (part or all whole wheat)
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk
Combine dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. Beat well. Drop batter by spoonfuls over the fruit and spread evenly (fruit may not be fully covered). Bake in preheated oven at 350 for 30-40 minutes. Serve with whipped cream or frozen yogurt.

May 31: In Search of Summer

Outdoor concert season is upon us, and we kicked it off at Wolftrap this Saturday listening to a Prairie Home Companion. My favorite parts: sharing a blanket with some strangers who generously welcomed us into their space (whew! That lawn sure does get filled up!), a delicious meal prepared by my sister including chocolate cake made out of beets, playing footsie with Ben, some amazing bluegrass music, and then arriving at my parents house to pick up the girls to discover Lily fast asleep on my mom's chest. And, of course, Garrison Keillor-- whew, that man can make me laugh.

Once upon a time, many years ago, my family lived right up the street from the park, and I remember sitting in the front yard with Ben listening to the concerts. Then again we went there as newlyweds to see this same show-- Prairie Home Companion-- just be fore we embarked upon our journey to Boston. And now, here we are, young parents, sneaking away for a date. I think these seasonal rituals can be such powerful benchmarks of where we have come from and where we are going... they just give such a beautiful rhythm to life.

Don't forget to check out how others are celebrating the season! I've been enjoying everyone's entries.

May 29: In Search of Summer

We took a little stroll in the country this morning-- a stunningly beautiful, magical spot in the country that Ben and I have been to, but have never actually seen (we picked up a friend there once at dusk, not realizing it was this whole arboretum). Quite the little adventure, complete with mythic structures, a treehouse, some horses, this beautiful old building, and so so many beautiful plants (oh, and some amazing barbecue sandwiches in a little town on the way home). Oh, it was wonderful, and all I could manage was turning to Ben every now and then and saying, "I'm so happy." What a gift it is to discover the freedom that we have in our family to explore the world together.

Where have your weekend wanderings taken you?

May 27: In Search of Summer

A long afternoon spent frolicking in the yard in bathing suits. The girls were sticky, sandy, and wet, so we just spent the rest of our time waiting for Ben to come home feeding crackers to Selma (ahem... I mean eating crackers) on the deck. I don't think we even noticed that it was hot and muggy out, truth be told.

May 26: In Search of Summer

A carousel ride, a picnic, and a visit to the museum (and a beloved "train ride," during which my two hands were more than full, hence the lack of pictures). I guess there's nothing new under the sun, but it certainly is magical to see the difference that a year makes for not one but two little girls. The picnic and museum, a huge hit for both girls. The carousel? The thrill of a lifetime for one, and a little scary for the baby of the family. Oh well, there's always next year.
