Feb 27: I love

small sandwiches ("belegte brötchen" to Ben's family) for dinner.  Tuesday nights I am kind of busy getting ready for a hypnobirthing class, so something very easy and crowd pleasing is always on the menu.

Going clockwise from top, we have anchovies (yum!  Hugo ate these plain, after blowing on them as if they were hot, that funny boy), boiled eggs (9 minutes in  boiling water makes them perfect: firm but still bright bright orange in the middle), french bread, a pepper for the kids and a salad for me and Ben, apples, Havarti cheese, and salami.  Favorite combinations include little sandwiches made of egg slices with anchovies, or salami and havarti, but I like to get really crazy and have havarti with anchovies. By the end of dinner there was exactly one egg, two slices of pepper, and a small heel of bread remaining.  I guess we can eat a lot.

Feb 22: I love

The end of February feels like the heart of the winter season here in Virginia.  We have passed many days within the four walls of our home.  We have tried many arts and crafts activity, read many book, and played many games.  We're itching to get out and enjoy the feeling of warm air on our skin.  There are no more holidays to tide us over and distract us.  I can honestly say I've forgotten what summer feels like.  What is it like to be outside and feel too hot?  I don't know.

So here we are and it is cold and windy and sometimes ice falls from the sky (please don't point out what a wimp I am, people who live in actually cold climates).

This week's distractions come in the form of one of Ben's favorite dinners, Valentine's decorations which we will leave up at least until Lily's birthday, and daffodils.   When I close my eyes I think I can see spring.

Feb 21: I love

having a family of book worms!  When you love something you really hope that your kids will love it too and it has been such a pleasure to see how our kids have developed a love of reading.  Zosia is now likely to be found actually reading aloud to her siblings, Lily is often found "reading aloud" to her siblings, and Hugo just loves to look through books.  Reading to the kids never seems to get old!

(Zosia just read this as her first chapter book the other night, and we are generally big fans of the Little Golden Books, although don't get me started on children's books, because we are sort of passionate about them around here.  Maybe I'll share some more favorites in a separate post sometime).

What have you and your kids been reading lately?

From Five Perspectives

Zosia: Drawing beautiful, complex, and at times utterly surreal things.  I will have to show you some of her drawings sometime.  Mind=blown
Ben: Tickling everyone in the family.  His family calls him a spielkind and I think he fits that title well.
Adele:  Doing dishes in high heels.  Oh yeah.
And over there they're still tickling!
Hugo:  Trucks, books, and running around (with the occasional break to snuggle).  Every day, all day.
Lily: always up for providing some entertainment. Who wore it better

Feb 19: I love

the silly ways these three little ones help out around the house.  Here's Zosia combing my hair.  She's really good at it, and I must admit, it feels sooooo relaxing.

On a whim, Ben asked Zosia and Lily to put a diaper on Hugo (not really thinking anything would come of it).  A minute later, he walked out to see Zosia lying on the floor next to Hugo, showing him what he was to do, and Lily actually putting a diaper on him.  I am speechless.  A thousand possibilities are running through my mind right now.

And here's Hugo washing the chalkboard.  The first one is a progress picture, the second one is a picture of his completed project.  Wipe, wipe, point, and done.  You've got to start somewhere, right?

Feb 14: I love

a good excuse to get crafty with the kids.  After an afternoon of assembly line style production, we had a box full of Valentines for each girl to take to school.  I think my favorite part was Zosia taking such care to pick the perfect valentine for each friend, selecting both the perfect animal and perfect sentiment for each.  I mean, you don't want to mess that sort of thing up.

Happy Valentine's Day!

bluegrass music.  I saw these guys on Friday night with some friends and they are spectacular musicians, and so much fun.  Ahoy!

Feb 10: I love

donuts on Sunday morning.  Usually we just get them on our way out of the door at church, but this place is pretty amazing (old fashioned sour cream all the way for the adults... but if you're a little girl who can pass up strawberry sprinkle?).  Coffee and donuts are so perfect together.

Feb 7: I love

The season of loooove.  Such a nice diversion in the middle of winter.

I'm joining along with Kerry and friends (for the fourth year now!  How did that happen?) celebrating love this month of February.
