On A Rainy Day

We have learned that one of the best ways to fight the rainy day blues is by heading into the city, and we just happened upon a couple of rainy days this weekend.  While "art gallery" might not come to mind as an ideal destination to take five kids seven and under, we have really enjoyed taking trips there this fall and winter.  There are a few favorite works of art that the kids are excited to visit ("Tiny Dancer" for Lily, and that painting of a man getting eaten by a shark for Hugo.  Can anyone see that there's a difference between boys and girls?), and as long as we keep slowly meandering the babies are pretty excited to see all that there is to see.  I love that the kids are familiar with the different works of art, and we seem to notice something new each time we walk trough.

This weekend we stopped at the cafe between the East and West wing for coffee (us) and snacks (the kids).  The babies enjoyed running around with a new friend, a tiny little girl just their size, who they kept walking up to and hugging, and Hugo and the girls got to walk on that awesome moving sidewalk with the lights.  I remember that from when I was a kid.

Maybe one of the reasons I love this museum so much is that my dad (who studied art history) took me and my sister there all the time when we were little.  I always make it a point to show our kids the two statues of maidens that used to be our favorites, because we thought they looked just like our mom and Aunt Basia.  I wonder which ones our kiddos will carry in their own memories (hopefully not that statue that looks like the babies playing with a decapitated head.  It's actually babies sculpting and painting(?), but always throws us for a loop!).

I hope you had happy weekend adventures, too!

It is so beautiful! One of my goals for the year is to explore DC more: any other favorites?
