Yarn Along: September 7

It's been a week of finishing on Zosia's tea leaves: all done and blocked as of last night! Now I'm just going to hide it away until I finish Lily's, and give them both on the Autumn equinox as a special present.

Last night I dyed the wool for Lily's sweater. I am new to dyeing, and somehow have been having the problem that even when I dye two skeins in the same dye solution, they end up coming out two slightly different colors. I made sure to mix it up well, so does anyone know why this might be happening or how to prevent it? For now, I am just embracing the slight variation in color!

And in the reading department I have been having a very exciting week of teaching a certain 4 year old to read from this book (and learning the theory behind it). We've completed the first five lessons, and if only I could videotape Zosia begging me for a new sound each day. I think this girl is pretty hungry to learn.

I'm joining in with the Yarn Along again today!

cute tiny tea leaves! i just finished one for my daughter...it'll be her christmas gift so i need to find a place to block it and then hide it where she'll be none the wiser!

i used that same book to teach my older 3 to read, will use it for 4+5 as well. loved the method. hope y'all enjoy it!

In a small house, I have to get so creative with my hiding spots! ;-) Glad to hear you had success with the book! teaching reading is so thrilling, isn't it?

that is an adorable sweater. i tried that book with my son and it didn't go over well. i will try it again this year with my daughter...i think it will go over better with her. he is just starting to want to learn to read now at 7! still has all his teeth too...i am beginning to wonder if the waldorf teeth theory isn't on to something!

I always love when children learn to read - it's a magical moment in many respects. I just ordered some dyeing books and want to try my hand at doing so (haven't done any in a long long time). Hope your little ones enjoy their lovely sweaters!

Your dyed yarn is beautiful! I haven't tried to do that yet. The tea leaves looks so pretty :)

Jen: I do think this reading approach is very personality-specific. I think for Zosia it works because she is a pretty systematic thinker, but I think it would be much more tricky for a right-brained person (and even for her, I will probably try to use a couple of different methods). I do think there's some truth to that teeth theory! ;-)
