The Meaning of Spiders

Do you ever feel like there's something that seems to be there, no matter where you turn? Perhaps it's an idea, an aspiration, a person? I have spent the last week surrounded by spiders. When we were driving back from the beach, a big, thick, scary spider crawled right across my windshield-- on the inside of my car. I got it, but it was one of those spiders that takes effort to kill. Then, yesterday, at my parents' house, I took my sunglasses off, and bam, another large spider landed on the floor. Was it there on my head? On my glasses?

It has become creepy-- the amount of spiders that have been flocking towards me by some sort of strange magnetism. Around the children, inside, outside. Why on earth are all of these spiders around? Have they always been here, and I've just failed to notice them?

I am definitely one to believe that the sacred is present in the mundane-- that God works through ordinary things like nature, food, people. Wasn't it a serpent that led humankind to sin? Wasn't it a burning bush that heralded God's presence to Moses? Wasn't it bread that Jesus chose to turn into his body? Ordinary, mundane, day-to-day sorts of things.

So why all of these spiders? A brief search on animal symbolism shows that spiders can symbolize the "Master Weaver, Weaver of the Web of Fate, Wisdom, Creativity, Divine Inspiration, Shapeshifting, Understanding the Patterns of Illusion, Female Energy for the Creative Force of Life, Creative, Connecting the Past with the Future, Creating Possibilities, Weaver of the Primordial Alphabet." Who knew that spiders were such potent symbolic beings? And what does all that mean? Does it mean anything?

Am I the only one out there who looks for meaning in these silly day-to-day things? Where are you finding meaning?

Hmmm, thinking about spiders in that way makes them a bit less scary. Well, maybe not if they are in your hair or crawling across the windshield...
I'm finding meaning in the random thoughts floating around in my head when I get the chance to get out and walk. A few times a week I get a solo walk in and it is amazing what things come floating into my consciousness when I have a block of uninterrupted time to think...

hmm.. I've never thought of it that way. About the ordinary objects I mean. I've noticed words coming to me in crops. A new word, or just an old word, that will noticably pop out at me numerous times in a short span. It does seem not random, very planned instead, full of more meaning than originally thought.

ha - I have a very spidery house and I don't clean them out very hard because I like to think they eat the bad bugs (well, not fleas, apparently!).
I'll look at them with new appreciation now - thank you.

So, I know that this post was made ages ago...but the same thing is happening to me right now...they are literally everywhere...and i don't deal with spiders well at the best of times. It has got to the point where I am sleeping with the light on. Did you happen to figure out what the meaning was for you? I imagine it's possible that the meaning could be different for me, but i would take comfort in the fact that you did figure it all out in the end?

Anon, it actually is helpful this post was written so long ago, because I do have some insight on what the meaning was for me. The summer of last year ended up being a time of major change: a new job for both me and my husband, a new pregnancy. In retrospect, all of those spiders were definitely messengers!

Gabrielle, it's always nice to find a kindred spirit! Did you end up finding meaning in the glass and snakes, as well?

same thing is happening to me this summer. I'm not consciously looking for them but they keep popping up. I'm going thru some major career, late 40's and relationship issues so i feel like they are my guides.....interesting. ..:-)

I found this old post while trying to find answers of my own on the subject of spiders surrounding me. For years it's been non stop! My last house was inundated with spiders and other creepy crawlies. Like stuff not from thins planet. I had pest ppl spray entire house twice it was that bad. But they always flooded back. I would go to work n ppl were like 'so weird, there's bugs/spiders around here' n I would think WHYYYY why are they surrounding me. I finally moved states yet they show up still. I recently went o/s to NZ n guess what, kept seeing them
Everywhere n also got bitten 5-6 times in my sleep, on my bum, by what we think was a white tail. Why is this happening? Lately there are giant spiders n little white tails n other kinds I've not seem roaming all over my house. I almost walked into one face first before. I always kill them unless partner is home n he refuses to kill huntsmen spiders n re-releases them only to have it back inside days later, taunting me. I would love to know why this is happening. It feels like a bad omen. Like I'm
Cursed. I hate spiders n they chill me.
Anyone have any ideas?
