Melty Crayon Art

This weekend we were quite lucky to have our dear friend Michelle over to share a favorite art activity of hers (she is a fabulous teacher). And so, today, I will share it with you, too.
Take a small canvas and line up crayons, tip down, in any order you like. Lily chose more of a spontaneous color pattern (surprise, surprise), while Zosia decided to go "pink, blue, pink, blue" across the whole top.

Keep going until you've covered the whole top of the canvas,

and then have an adult glue gun the crayons in place (warning: that glue is hot!).

Now comes the fun part. Take a hair dryer, turn it on, and point it at the tips of your crayons. It takes a minute or two,

but you will start to see the wax start to drip and melt down the canvas. You can allow it to melt as little or as much as you like.

And voila! I turned them over on a whim, and when I later asked Zosia whether she wanted them the other way around she informed me, "No, I want it like a fence on fire." Quite a good description, don't you think?

They were placed on the mantle to dry yesterday: I'm searching for a more kid-level spot to display the beautiful artwork. I have caught both of them climbing up to the mantle to ever so gently touch the wax over the course of the day.

what a cool idea! I've been saving crayons and even 'rescued' a huge ziplock that a friend was looking to get rid of- I was planing on making candles with the boys but I think this might just be our next crayon project.

So glad you got some blog material out of all the fun! I heard rave reviews from parents last night at our school picnic in regards to their children's own crayon art. Who knew, right? Either way, I've got more fun up my sleeve for my next visit with the Collins Crew. xoxo

Man, I wish this idea was around when my kids were little! Alas, I'm an empty-nester so will have to wait for grand children...or will I???? It seems too fun to wait for. Maybe I can share it with a friend who has kids!
